Be a Protein Star for Renal Diet

Table of Contents

As part of a Renal diet, protein is often highlighted as one of the most important parts of building healthy meals and snacks. In addition to choosing low potassium, phosphorous, and sodium options–making protein the “star” of the meal is encouraged for adequate healing and recovery while on dialysis. This pictorial handout identifies three categories of proteins in addition to some protein “flops” that aren’t going to be the star of the meal for a dialysis patient. You’ll find some of the following items listed on the handout:

    • Meat: such as fresh chicken, or eggs
    • Supplements: bars or liquid protein
    • Vegetarian options: peas or tofu
    • Flops: may include fast food like KFC, or non-renal supplements such as Ensure

This handout is perfect for someone new to dialysis or a veteran patient needing a refresher on how to chose Renal-friendly high protein foods!
