As renal dietitians, we are no strangers to providing protein education. With the new KDOQI guidelines being released there will likely be a shift in perspective. Albumin is no longer considered an accurate marker for malnutrition when considered on it’s own.
This changes the recommendation from “the more protein the better” to helping patients understand the right amount of protein their body needs.
This handout will:
- Helps patients easily visualize all the important things protein does in their body
- Allow them to really connect with the sometimes abstract functions of protein
- Gives the dietitian the ability to show patients the different types of protein sources and the amount of servings that are appropriate AND realistic for the patient
- Allow patients to see how to eat the right amount of protein for them within the context of a well-balanced diet
Also included is a colorful protein word search that will help patients learn and remember the importance of protein in a fun way.
This handout brings a fresh look and updated, evidence-based approach to protein recommendations that will be easily understood and implemented by dialysis patients
